This session will be based off of the book Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life by Marshall B. Rosenberg and the four main areas of successful communication it presents: observations, feelings, needs, and requests. We'll discuss a way to communicate by eliminating judgements and getting to the root needs of the students and adults with whom we all work. In the first half of the session, we will identify what each of those four steps to communication mean. The last half of the session will be spent using scenarios to practice this communication. The key is not perfection but to continually practice this style of communication, eliminating judgment, developing empathy, and meeting needs of youth, fellow staff members, and more.
